The rain-slicked turf of Munich's Olympiastadion reflected the floodlights as the clock ticked into extra time, the air thick with tension. A thousand voices from the yellow-and-white corner roared in unison as Rudi Völler received a loose ball near the edge of the box. He didn't hesitate, striking it low and hard past the Hamburg keeper just before the final whistle could have sounded for another draw. The stadium erupted; the Elfenbein (Ivory) had struck again.
