Claptrap

Claptrap is a character in the action role-playing game series Borderlands, introduced in the original 2009 title. He serves as an NPC in most games except Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (2014) and the 'Claptastic Voyage' DLC for Borderlands 2, where he is a playable Vault Hunter. Considered the franchise's mascot, Claptrap often provides comic relief, though reception to the character has been mixed.

Lore & Background

Claptrap's design originated from a hand-drawn sketch by designer Lorin Wood. When Borderlands shifted to a 'concept art style' close to cel-shading, Claptrap remained virtually unchanged.

Reader's Guide

In Borderlands 3, Claptrap introduces players to Pandora. His voice acting was handled by David Eddings in the first four games before being replaced by Jim Foronda in Borderlands 2 VR due to a public falling-out involving Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford. Outside the main series, he appears as a purchasable pet and quest participant in Fortnite, an easter egg in Torchlight II and Ready Player One, and as a poker opponent in Poker Night 2.
