Throughout the saga, their loyalty lies solely with Queen Thorn. They frequently find themselves at odds with both the Bone cousins and the Rat Creature factions, caught in the middle of a three-way struggle for control of the land. Humans and Rats were primarily adversaries throughout most of the series; it was only near the end, when the Lord of Darkness (and the Locusts) posed an existential threat, that a temporary alliance formed between them to face this greater danger. Unlike many other forces in the valley, the Fright Knights did not crumble with the defeat of the Lord of Darkness; instead, they remained intact and continued serving Queen Thorn as her loyal protectors.

The Fright Knights function as the organized military arm of Queen Atora's human kingdom. Their primary goal is to maintain the Queen's authority and protect her interests from external threats like the Rat Creatures or wandering outsiders such as the Bone cousins. Members are typically nameless soldiers clad in distinctive black armor with skull motifs, riding armored horses. They operate under direct command from the royal court rather than a separate lord. Their role in the conflict is often that of an obstacle; they capture intruders and enforce curfews, representing the rigid, oppressive order of the human world. While less chaotic than the Rat Creatures, their discipline makes them dangerous opponents. They are equipped with standard medieval weaponry and rely on formation tactics. Ultimately, they serve as a reminder of the corruption within the Valley's leadership, standing between the innocent protagonists and the safety of their home.
