Last updated

Ajay Devgn is an Indian actor, film director and producer who works primarily in Hindi cinema, having appeared in over 100 films and winning four National Film Awards and four Filmfare Awards.[1] In 2016, the Padma Shri, which is India's fourth-highest civilian honor, was conferred upon him by the Government of India.[2]

Key facts and history

Born Vishal Virender Devgan on 2 April 1969 in New Delhi, he changed his stage name to "Ajay" upon entering the film industry in 1991 because several other actors named Vishal were launching at the same time.[3][4] He won his second National Film Award for Best Actor for portraying Bhagat Singh in The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002).[5] Devgn was awarded the National Film Award for Best Actor for his dramatic portrayal in the 1998 film Zakhm.[5] Following a request from his family, Devgn altered the spelling of his last name from Devgan to Devgn in August 2009.[6]

Working with filmmaker Rohit Shetty is a frequent occurrence for Devgn.[7]

What the cited sources add

A 1999 Rediff review of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam noted that intense scenes are Ajay Devgn's forte and that he performed well in the scene where he gets exasperated with his wife's stubbornness.[8]
