Jimmy Darmody
Nucky Thompson's protégé turned rival, whose descent into full-blooded gangsterism leads to his execution by the man he sought to overthrow.
James Edison Darmody is a fictional character in the television show Boardwalk Empire, portrayed by Michael Pitt. He serves as one of the main characters in the first two seasons of the series. Unlike most other main characters, Jimmy is not based on a historical figure, though he may be inspired by Atlantic City politician James H. "Jimmy" Boyd, a protégé of Nucky Johnson. Michael Pitt is the only actor besides Steve Buscemi to appear in every episode for which he is credited. Jimmy's story arc is defined by his transformation from a war-traumatized veteran into a ruthless gangster who ultimately betrays and attempts to kill his mentor.

Lore & Background
Jimmy Darmody was born to Commodore Louis Kaestner and Gillian Darmody. His mother was only 13 at the time of his birth, while his father was 54. The Commodore's protégé, Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, arranged for the Commodore to rape Gillian in exchange for a promotion to Sheriff of Atlantic City. Raised by his mother with Nucky acting as a father figure, Jimmy faced indifference from his biological father. He attended Princeton University where he met his future wife, Angela. In Season 2, it is revealed that Jimmy left school to fight in World War I due to guilt over a drunken sexual encounter with his mother and likely facing expulsion after assaulting a professor who made a pass at her. Stationed in France on the Western Front against Germany, his leg was wounded by fragments from a German grenade, leaving him with a permanent limp.
Reader's Guide
Jimmy Darmody begins as the ward of Atlantic City political boss Nucky Thompson but grows resentful after learning Nucky arranged his mother's rape by his own father. He attempts to seize control of Atlantic City's illegal alcohol trade, taking over operations after his father suffers a stroke. His partnership with Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, and Meyer Lansky pressures him into ordering an assassination attempt on Nucky. After Horvitz kills his wife Angela, Jimmy's grief turns to rage; he kills his father when the Commodore defends Gillian. He later aids Nucky in securing a mistrial by killing witness Alderman Jim Neary. Realizing Nucky has lured him with false claims of kidnapping Horvitz, Jimmy walks unarmed to face death. He tells Nucky he truly died during the war and explains the mechanics of shooting someone before Nucky shoots him twice in the head.
Origins and Psychological Trauma
Jimmy is the son of Commodore Louis Kaestner and Gillian Darmody. His mother was only 13 at his birth, while his father was 54. Nucky Thompson arranged for the Commodore to rape Gillian in exchange for being promoted to Sheriff of Atlantic City. Raised by his mother with support from Nucky, who acted as a father figure, Jimmy faced indifference from his biological father. He attended Princeton University and met his future wife, Angela. He left school to fight in World War I on the Western Front against Germany after a drunken sexual encounter with his mother and an assault on a professor who made a pass at her likely led to expulsion. His leg was wounded by German grenade fragments, leaving him with a permanent limp.
Rise in Prohibition Crime
In January 1920, Jimmy returned to Atlantic City displaying signs of post-traumatic stress disorder and refused to return to school. He worked as Nucky's driver and bodyguard but grew frustrated. He and Al Capone hijacked a liquor shipment sold by Nucky to Arnold Rothstein, killing the drivers; one survivor identified Jimmy before dying. Nucky blamed the deceased Hans Schroeder and sent Jimmy to Chicago to work for Johnny Torrio alongside Capone. When Philadelphia gangsters threatened Nucky, he recalled Jimmy. In Chicago, Jimmy met Richard Harrow, a disfigured marksman who became his main ally. Jimmy tasked Harrow with killing a gangster who had disfigured Pearl, a prostitute Jimmy cared for.
The Betrayal of Family Bonds
After the Commodore survived a poisoning attempt, Jimmy learned Nucky arranged his mother's rape and plotted with his father and Eli Thompson to take control from Nucky. By Season 2, Jimmy was married to Angela and raising their son, Tommy. When the Commodore suffered a stroke, Jimmy took over his operations. Pressured by partners Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, and Meyer Lansky, Jimmy ordered an assassination attempt on Nucky; Nucky was shot in the hand but survived when Clifford Lathorp killed the assassin. To pay debts to Manny Horvitz after Nucky's associate Owen Sleater blew up his liquor warehouse, Jimmy bought medicinal alcohol from George Remus. After hiring Waxey Gordon to kill Horvitz failed, Horvitz broke into Jimmy's home and shot Angela and her lesbian lover dead. Devastated, Jimmy attacked his mother when she spoke nonchalantly about the deaths. When the Commodore defended Gillian, Jimmy killed him.
Downfall and Final Confrontation
Jimmy helped Nucky secure a mistrial in an election fraud case by killing witness Alderman Jim Neary and staging it as a suicide. Nucky then claimed to have kidnapped Horvitz, luring Jimmy into a trap. Knowing he was being led to his death, Jimmy went unarmed to meet Nucky. He told Nucky he had truly died during the war and even explained the mechanics of shooting someone. Nucky shot him twice in the head, killing him. Sixteen months later, Gillian ran the Commodore's mansion as a brothel using a body resembling Jimmy until she was convicted of murder in Season 4 after Richard Harrow tipped off authorities to Jimmy's burial site.
Reception and Production Notes
Series creator Terence Winter planned to kill Jimmy from the beginning of Season 2, originally intending for him to survive longer. The decision was made to push the story to its logical extreme: Jimmy betrayed Nucky by trying to have him killed, so Nucky killing him was the only honest conclusion. Rumors that Jimmy was killed because actor Michael Pitt was difficult on set were denied by both Pitt and Winter. Pitt won Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in 2010 and 2011 with the cast and was nominated for a Monte-Carlo Television Festival Award. The show's "undercut" hairstyle became popular at barber shops across the US.
