Farewell Daddy Blues

"Farewell Daddy Blues" serves as the twelfth episode of the fourth season of *Boardwalk Empire*, the 48th episode overall. It aired on HBO on November 17, 2013. The episode was penned by series creator Terence Winter and executive producer Howard Korder, with executive producer Tim Van Patten directing. Set in Atlantic City during the 1920s Prohibition era, the story follows Enoch "Nucky" Thompson as he tries to end the feud between Chalky and Narcisse, while his brother Eli faces increasing pressure from Tolliver to provide information.

In the plot, an angry Chalky confronts Nucky about his partnership with Narcisse, leading Nucky to arrange a meeting between the two men to settle control of the Onyx Club. At Gillian’s trial, Richard testifies that she made Roger’s body resemble Jimmy’s, but the defense argues his disability hinders his identification. Richard asks Nucky for Jimmy’s location as evidence, and Nucky agrees in exchange for Richard performing a hit. Richard then sends Julia, Paul, and Tommy to live with Emma, promising to join them soon. In Chicago, Van Alden suspects Torrio ordered a hit on Capone. Torrio is shot outside his home but survives, announcing his retirement and appointing Capone as the new boss before planning to move to Italy. Eli meets Nucky at the Albatross, where Nucky holds him at gunpoint, revealing he knows Eli is an informant. Eli confesses he was forced to inform Tolliver to protect his son Willie from prison. Willie flees, and Eli returns home to find Tolliver, who threatens to arrest Willie and implies he will be raped. Enraged, Eli beats Tolliver to death in a violent fight as his family watches in terror. Chalky meets Narcisse at the Onyx, where Narcisse holds Maybelle hostage and demands Daughter back. Richard aims a rifle but hesitates, firing only after Maybelle moves in front of Narcisse, killing her. A gunfight erupts, wounding Richard and forcing him to flee. Chalky escapes, but Narcisse is arrested when authorities arrive. Richard rests under the pier on the boardwalk. Hoover meets Narcisse in jail, offering a deal: reveal details about Marcus Garvey and go free, or face prison for Tolliver’s murder. Nucky is questioned about Eli’s whereabouts, and Eli’s family moves away. Nucky tells Willie to care for his family, saying Eli is safe. Eli arrives in Chicago and meets Van Alden.
