Publication history

Announced on October 12, 2012, Threshold was part of The New 52's Fourth Wave. The series followed storylines from Green Lantern: New Guardians Annual #1 and Blue Beetle #16, both released in March 2013. Keith Giffen planned to bring back many space-based characters, including the Omega Men, Space Ranger, Lady Styx, Space Cabbie, and Star Hawkins. A Larfleeze backup feature, drawn by Scott Kolins, appeared in the first five issues; that character then got his own series. Starting with issue #6, a Star Hawkins backup by Timothy Green II and Joseph Silver ran. The series ended after eight issues.

Plot

The story begins at the end of Green Lantern: New Guardians Annual #1, where Jediah Caul, a former deep cover operative for the Green Lantern Corps who answered to the Guardians of the Universe, is taken prisoner and thrown into a deadly competition called The Hunted. His power ring, now drained, is jammed into his chest, and his power battery is taken by the game’s host, Bleeding Adonis. The Hunted is a bounty-hunting glimmernet game show broadcast from the planet Tolerance, located in Lady Styx’s Tenebrian Dominion. Anyone deemed a threat to the Dominion gets a bounty placed on them and is forced to participate. Caul starts the series dodging hunters and hunt clubs. He gets help from Ember, who was originally supposed to capture him with Star Hawkins and bring him into their resistance group. Ember is also a contestant in The Hunted. Another competitor, Stealth, crosses paths with Rikane “Ric” Starr, a former Space Ranger. It turns out Starr is secretly working with Colonel T’omas T’morra, the resistance leader, to create blind spots in the game’s arena. The Crimson Thrust hunt club tries to ambush Stealth and Starr, but the pair escapes and takes out several club members. Blue Beetle, last seen captured by Lady Styx’s agents, is also dropped into the competition without his scarab weapon. Caul later meets T’morra and Ember at a bar, where they tell him about Beetle, suggesting Caul’s leftover Green Lantern energy could affect the Reach armor. Captain K’rot, along with his team Sleen and Pig-Iron, aims to claim Beetle’s scarab. The scarab activates to defend its unconscious host. When K’rot’s group encounters Caul, the scarab goes wild. Only after Caul moves far away does Jaime Reyes regain control and fly off. Star Hawkins and Ilda, a robot carrying the personality and memories of his dead wife, show up to cloak Caul and reveal where his power battery is hidden. Back at T’morra’s bar, Starr and Ember try to recruit Stealth. T’morra believes they can use reverse-propaganda to flip the game’s narrative, since Stealth is one of the longest-surviving contestants. Ember follows Stealth, hoping to befriend her and learn from her experience. Meanwhile, Blue Beetle is being tracked by another contestant, a New God named Lonar, who has his own plans for the young hero.
