Publication history
Calculator debuted in Detective Comics #463 (September 1976), created by Bob Rozakis and Mike Grell. His powers and costume were inspired by the pocket calculator, featuring a keypad on his chest and an LED display on his headpiece that could project hard light constructs. He was defeated by Blue Beetle, Atom, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Elongated Man, Hawkman, Batman, and Air Wave.
Fictional character biography
Calculator initially appeared in one-shot adventures in Detective Comics, stealing objects at their most valuable and fighting many Justice League members. After repeated defeats, he added a button that analyzed each hero and generated a force field to prevent future defeat by that same hero, though he remained vulnerable to new opponents or if his own weaponry was turned against him. He appeared intermittently in titles such as Blue Beetle and Hero Hotline. In the 2004 miniseries Identity Crisis, he was revamped as a non-costumed information broker for supervillains, charging $1,000 per question. He became a core member of Lex Luthor's Secret Society of Super Villains in Villains United, alongside Doctor Psycho, Doctor Light, and Deathstroke. Calculator suffers from severe obsessive-compulsive disorder, which he initially managed with medication. In Birds of Prey, his obsession with discovering Oracle's identity led to a mental breakdown; he stopped taking his medication and had nightmares about Oracle's green mask avatar. In Birds of Prey issue #111, he met Oracle face-to-face at a computer-industry conference but was prevented from learning her true identity by a stratagem from her allies. A year after the Crisis, he became leader of the Society, which operated as a union for supervillains.
