Background
Black Sabbath spent the years 1989 through 1996 under contract with I.R.S. Records, a partnership that produced five albums: Headless Cross, Tyr, Dehumanizer (issued only in Europe), Cross Purposes, and Forbidden. I.R.S. shut down by the end of 1996, and after a brief run of reissues through EMI Records, the rights eventually reverted to Tony Iommi. As early as March 2016, Iommi spoke about revisiting the Tony Martin-era catalog, saying he wanted to add a couple of new songs with Martin and also work on Cross Purposes and Forbidden.
In February 2019, he mentioned he was tinkering with a remix of Forbidden alongside Mike Exeter. On May 14, 2020, Iommi told Eddie Trunk that the remix was finished but that he was holding off for the right moment to put it out. By 2022, Martin confirmed that a record deal had been secured, opening the door for a reissue. On December 31, 2023, Iommi announced a box set of Martin-era albums would arrive in May 2024.
The title Anno Domini 1989–1995 was revealed on March 21, 2024, with a release date of May 31. The following day, remastered versions of Headless Cross and Anno Mundi hit streaming services as a two-song single. On May 24, 2024, a newly remixed Get a Grip and a remastered Evil Eye were released as another two-song single, accompanied by a remastered music video for Get a Grip on Iommi’s YouTube channel.
Release
Anno Domini 1989–1995 was released on 31 May 2024 via Iommi's rights label, Bluefame Ltd., through BMG in Europe and Warner Records in North America. The box set does not include The Eternal Idol (1987), Martin's debut with Black Sabbath, as it was released by Vertigo/Warner Bros., while I.R.S. Records released all albums from Headless Cross to Forbidden. An additional song was added to three of the four discs: Cloak and Dagger on the Headless Cross disc, What's the Use? on Cross Purposes, and Loser Gets It All on Forbidden. Tyr is the only disc with no bonus material. On 15 November 2024, the four remastered or remixed albums were also released individually on CD and vinyl.
