Karl Georg Friedrich Rudolf Leuckart (7 October 1822 – 6 February 1898) was a German zoologist who is widely recognized as a foundational figure in parasitology. Born in Helmstedt to a book printer and his wife, Leuckart developed an early interest in entomology, influenced by a local lepidopterist. He studied medicine at the University of Göttingen, where the physiologist Rudolf Wagner became a key mentor. After graduating in 1845, Leuckart worked as Wagner’s assistant and collaborated with Heinrich Frey on a revision of invertebrate anatomy. His dissertation on monstrosities earned him a doctorate, and he completed his habilitation in 1847. Following a North Sea expedition, he focused on marine organism classification, notably splitting Georges Cuvier’s phylum Radiata into the separate groups Coelenterata and Echinodermata. He became an associate professor at the University of Giessen in 1850 and a full professor in 1855. During this period, he investigated insect reproduction, discovering the micropyle of the egg and studying parthenogenesis in bees. He also introduced an early concept of polymorphism based on his work with siphonophores. Leuckart’s most significant contribution was his two-volume work on human parasites and their diseases, published between 1863 and 1869, which effectively established parasitology as a distinct scientific field. He helped elucidate the life cycle of *Trichinella spiralis* and, alongside Rudolf Virchow and Friedrich Albert von Zenker, documented its transmission between swine and humans, supporting the creation of meat inspection laws. He also independently discovered the life cycle of the sheep liver fluke. In 1869, Leuckart moved to the University of Leipzig, where he studied invertebrate comparative anatomy and the evolution of the eye. He served as rector in 1877 and, with colleagues, developed a series of 101 illustrated wall charts for zoology instruction between 1877 and 1892. He was made an honorary foreign member of the Linnean Society of London in 1877. Leuckart’s legacy includes the annual Rudolf-Leuckart-Medaille awarded by the German Society of Parasitology, and a species of Australian lizard, *Anomalopus leuckartii*, named in his honor. He died in 1898 from pneumonia, having suffered the earlier loss of his son, a chemist who died young.
