His work spanned parasitology, invertebrate anatomy, and the development of teaching wall charts.[1][2]

Life and work

That same year he co-wrote "Anatomy of the Invertebrates" with Heinrich Frey.[3][2] He earned his doctorate with a dissertation on monsters in 1845.[3] Leuckart died of pneumonia in early 1898.[2][4] Leuckart's father, a book-printer owner, and his mother Friederike Dorothea Charlotte née Theuerkauf (1785–1834) raised him in Helmstedt.[3]

After passing his state exam in 1845, Leuckart took a position as Wagner's assistant.[3][2] At Giessen, Leuckart attained the rank of associate professor in 1850 and was promoted to full professor five years later.[3] A call to Leipzig in 1869 made him ordinary professor of zoology and zootomy there.[2] During his 1877 rectorate, Leuckart delivered an address titled "Über die Einheitsbestrebungen in der Zoologie".[2][1]
