Savage Pond

A realistic tadpole-to-frog colony simulation.

Last updated

Savage Pond is an action pond simulation game written by Peter Judd for the Acorn Electron and BBC Micro, and by Gwyll Jones for the Atari 8-bit computers in 1983 and the Commodore 64 in 1984. It was originally released under the Starcade label and reissued in 1985 when Argus acquired the Bug-Byte budget label.

The game sets you as a tadpole in a pond, aiming to build a colony of frogs while dodging hazards. Its setting and characters are quite true to life, which was unique at the time—contrasting with games like Frogger (with frogs that cannot swim) and Centipede (basically a space shoot 'em up with insect-like characters). The instructions include Latin names and non-game info for the 'cast', but despite appearances it is a fast-paced arcade game, not an educational one.
