Mötley Crüe version
In 1985, Mötley Crüe put out a cover of "Smokin' in the Boys Room" as a single. It climbed to number 16 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, marking the band's first song to break into the Top 40. This version was featured in the 1986 movie The Wraith, directed by Chieffallo. Years later, LeAnn Rimes recorded her own take for the album Nashville Outlaws: A Tribute to Mötley Crüe. The music video for the cover is a conceptual piece starring Michael Berryman as the school principal. It centers on a high schooler named Jimmy, who feels picked on and misunderstood. After the principal paddles him for honestly saying a dog ran off with his homework, a frustrated Jimmy heads to the boys' bathroom. There, he spots Mötley Crüe reflected in the mirrors, and they pull him through into their world. Together, they peer through a barred window at a dystopian vision of the school. At the end, the principal apologizes and offers an A for the lost homework, but Jimmy refuses and tears it up. As he walks away, bassist Nikki Sixx reaches out from the mirror and snatches the stunned principal's toupée. The track features Vince Neil on vocals, Mick Mars on guitar, Nikki Sixx on bass, Tommy Lee on drums, and Mickey Raphael on harmonica.
