Composition
Lobo wrote the song under his real name Kent LaVoie. He was working on a tune about traveling around the country with a girl and trying to rhyme "you and me" with proper grammar, but could not find a suitable rhyme. After returning home to Florida, he decided to turn the phrase to "me and you." While sitting in a room with a sliding glass door overlooking the backyard, his German Shepherd dog named Boo ran around the corner and looked in at him. This inspired him to add "a dog named Boo" into the song. He had not been to most of the places mentioned except Georgia, but included locations that sounded far away such as Minneapolis and L.A.
