Biography
Jack Ingram got his start in Houston, Texas, where he was born. While studying psychology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and belonging to the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, he began writing songs and performing. His first gigs were at a bar near the TCU campus in Fort Worth, a place owned by his friend John Clay Wolfe. In the early 1990s, he traveled across Texas opening for Mark Chesnutt and other performers.
His debut album, a self-titled effort, came out in 1995 on the Rhythmic label, and later that year he released Lonesome Questions. Warner Bros. Records picked him up, putting out a live album called Live at Adair's and reissuing his first two independent records. In 1997, he appeared on the 22nd season of Austin City Limits and released Livin' or Dyin' on Rising Tide Records, which gave him his first charting single, "Flutter," which reached No. 51.
Two years later, he put out Hey You on Lucky Dog, a division of Epic Records, and its single "How Many Days" peaked at No. 64 on the country charts. In 2000, he teamed up with Charlie Robison and Bruce Robison for the live album Unleashed Live. His second Lucky Dog album, Electric, became his first to hit the Top Country Albums chart, even though it didn't produce a charting single; a year later, he released an EP called Electric: Extra Volts before leaving the label.
He followed that with two more live albums, then signed to Columbia Nashville for the 2004 release Young Man, which had no singles. Another live album, Acoustic Motel, came out in 2005. On February 3, 2013, H-E-B aired a Super Bowl commercial called 'Texas Myths' that featured Ingram. Also in 2005, he signed with Big Machine Records and released the mostly live album Live: Wherever You Are.
Its first single, "Wherever You Are," became his first top-40 hit and later his only No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, and it was also the first No. 1 for Big Machine. The album's other studio track, "Love You," was released as a single and peaked at No. 12; Trent Summar & the New Row Mob also recorded it for their 2005 album Horseshoes & Hand Grenades.
