Background and release

MacKenzie Porter and Jake Etheridge met during a songwriting session, but "Happy Ever After You" was their first songwriting collaboration in ten years. Porter noted that the couple sometimes joked before leaving home for separate sessions, with one asking "got any good hooks I can steal?", and that this song was a hook one of them had suggested months earlier. Although they had long kept their careers separate, Porter faced challenges after her longtime team at Big Loud closed their artist management division, and she asked Etheridge to write with her one night to feel better.

Porter shared a clip of them playing the song on TikTok in December 2024, receiving positive comments from Luke Combs, Ella Langley, John Mayer, Brandi Carlile, and Ernest. They released the song in January 2025, later servicing it to country radio in Canada and Australia. Unsure initially if the collaboration would be temporary, they decided to pursue a duo project, choosing the name Thelma & James—Thelma being Porter's middle name and her grandmother's first name, and James being Etheridge's legal first name and his grandfather's first name.
