Biathlon at the 2022 Winter Olympics

The biathlon competition at the 2022 Winter Olympics took place from February 5 to 18 at the National Biathlon Centre, part of the Zhangjiakou venue cluster located 180 kilometers north of Beijing at an elevation of 1,665 meters. The number of quota spots dropped by 20 from the 2018 Games, with a total of 210 available—105 for men and 105 for women. The program featured 11 events: five each for men and women, plus one mixed relay.

Qualification for the Games was capped at 210 athletes, split evenly by gender. The first 93 spots per gender were determined by combining Nation Cup scores from each nation’s top three athletes in their best six sprints, one individual race, three relays, one mixed relay, and one single mixed relay, using results from the 2020–21 and 2021–22 Biathlon World Cup seasons up to January 16, 2022. The remaining 12 spots per gender were allocated from the IBU Qualifying Points List to nations that had not yet qualified any athletes, with a maximum of two per nation. As of January 16, 2022, National Olympic Committees ranked 1–3 could qualify six athletes, ranks 4–10 five athletes, and ranks 11–20 four athletes, for both men and women. The final 12 spots in each gender were filled individually from the IBU Qualifying Points List, again with a cap of two per nation for those not already qualified. Two of these spots were reserved for the host nation if it had not already qualified. The host could only enter relay competitions if it had enough qualified athletes. Unused quotas were reallocated from the IBU Qualifying Points List to nations with no qualifiers or only one. For each event, a maximum of four athletes per NOC could compete, except the mass start, where up to six could qualify.

The competition schedule for all 11 events used local time (UTC+8), as set in March 2021, though it was subject to change.

A total of 212 athletes from 30 nations (including the Russian Olympic Committee, designated as ROC) qualified to participate. The number of participants per nation is noted in parentheses.
