Background
The track stands out for its heavy use of foghorn, ship’s bell, and Morse code sounds, combined with electric sitar, backward piano, filtered vocals, and phasing effects. Lead singer Mary Aiese O’Leary later told Mojo that she initially disliked the foghorn and vocal effects, but grew to appreciate them, noting the song’s success in the UK compared to its poor reception in the US. Some mistakenly credit Lorraine Mazzola with the lead vocal, but a German TV performance—introduced by Dave Lee Travis—shows Aiese singing.
The error likely comes from Mazzola taking over live vocals the following year when Aiese took a break. That TV clip is the only known archive footage of the group from the 1960s. The single reached number 127 on the US chart but became their biggest hit at number 13 in the UK. Afterward, the group toured the UK with backing band Clouds.
Band member Young recalled attending a reception for the single with John Lennon and Ringo Starr at the Revolution Club. The single was released across Europe, Australia, and Rhodesia. Its B-side, “Toom-Toom is a Little Boy,” appeared on a rare 1968 Iranian EP alongside tracks by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, Otis Redding, and Tommy James. The song has been reissued three times in the UK: in 1972 on Bell Records to coincide with Reparata’s cover of “Octopus’s Garden”; in January 1985 as the B-side on Old Gold label OG 9504 with Bruce Channel’s “Keep On”; and in March 2016 as the B-side on a UK reissue of “Panic” on the Outta Sight label.
