Biography
Joe Nichols was born and raised in Rogers, Arkansas, the second son of Michael Curtis Nichols and Robin Larson Nichols. He has an older brother and two younger sisters. His father, a trucker who played bass in local country bands, was part Cherokee, and his mother is part Comanche. Nichols attended South Stokes High School in Walnut Cove, North Carolina. His father died in 2002 after a six-year battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
Musical career
After meeting producer Randy Edwards, Nichols signed with Intersound Records at age 19 and released his debut album in 1996. The single "Six of One, Half a Dozen of the Other" reached No. 74 on the RPM country charts in Canada, but the album sold poorly and he was dropped. A subsequent deal with Giant Records produced no singles or albums. He worked various jobs in Nashville before meeting session guitarist Brent Rowan in 1999, who helped him secure a contract with Universal South Records.
His second album, Man with a Memory, was released in July 2002. Its lead single "The Impossible" reached No. 3 on the Billboard country charts and was the tenth most-played country song of 2003. The album earned Nichols a Top New Male Vocalist award from the Academy of Country Music, three Grammy nominations, and platinum certification. The second single "Brokenheartsville" became his first No. 1 hit in 2003, and two further singles reached the Top 20.
He also received the Country Music Association's Horizon Award that year. In 2004 he toured with Alan Jackson and released his third studio album, Revelation, which produced two Top Ten hits. Later that year he issued a Christmas album, A Traditional Christmas, four tracks of which entered the country charts.
Personal life
Nichols entered rehab on October 13, 2007, after seeking therapy in January 2005 following a drunk and high outburst in Colorado. He wed Heather Singleton, a friend since age 19, on September 9, 2007, in Georgia; they have two daughters, and he has another daughter from an earlier relationship, born in 1998. He has always been a St. Louis Cardinals fan.
