Country Things

Tenth studio album by Granger Smith, released as two volumes.

Granger Smith’s tenth studio album, Country Things, came out on September 25, 2020, split into two separate discs: Country Things, Vol. 1 and Country Things, Vol. 2. Smith started writing songs in early 2019, but stopped after his three-year-old son died. He returned to writing nearly ten months later, and the COVID-19 pandemic gave him more time to finish the album. The first single, “That’s Why I Love Dirt Roads,” was released in October 2019.

Background

Granger Smith started writing for what would become his tenth studio album in early 2019, but was only halfway finished when his three-year-old son River died in a drowning accident at home. Work stopped for nearly ten months. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Smith returned to songwriting and completed the project. Rather than cram all the material onto one release, he split it into two eight-song discs. Country Things, Vol. 1 came out on September 25, 2020, and Vol. 2 followed in November.

Inspiration

Country Things Vol. 1 is a personal album for Smith, who after dealing with the tragedy of his son's death, said "it became about appreciating the gratefulness in the day without being overweighed by the worries of tomorrow." He wanted to focus on "the things you want to raise your kids with and find joy in. The country things." Songs on the album reflect not only his family values and deep introspection, but also Smith's penchant for fun. The track "Country and Ya Know It" features an appearance by his alter ego, Earl Dibbles Jr.
