The air in Munich was heavy with regret after a humiliating home defeat against River Plate sent the Bavarian faithful into despair. But football offered a second chance: a return leg in the heart of Buenos Aires. Under the sweltering heat of the Estadio Monumental, Franz Beckenbauer orchestrated the defense with his trademark elegance while Gerd Müller prowled for every loose ball. When the final whistle blew after a 2-0 triumph, the players collapsed onto the grass, utterly spent but triumphant. They had already conquered Europe; now, in one of football's most dramatic reversals, they had conquered the world twice in a single season.
