Gelsdorf began his playing career at Arminia Bielefeld in the 1972/73 season, joining from MSV Duisburg. He made 56 appearances with one goal in the Regionalliga West. He later played for Bayer 04 Leverkusen, where he played in all 38 games and scored eight goals in the 1978/79 2. Bundesliga championship-winning season. He ended his playing career in the 1985/86 season. As a coach, he succeeded Rinus Michels as head coach of Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 13 April 1989 and was in charge until 31 May 1991. He later coached Borussia Mönchengladbach, reaching the 1992 DFB Cup final, and also coached VfL Bochum, SC Fortuna Köln, KFC Uerdingen 05, VfL Osnabrück, and Rot-Weiss Essen.
