A pre-season battle of Germany's elite, but not for Bayer Leverkusen in 1995.
The DFB-Ligapokal, also known as the German League Cup, was a pre-season tournament featuring top Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal teams. The competition was introduced in 1997; no edition existed in 1995. The 1995 match was the DFB-Supercup, won by Borussia Dortmund; Bayer Leverkusen did not participate.

The DFB-Ligapokal was introduced in 1997 as a replacement for the DFB-Supercup, which had been played from 1987 to 1996. The 1995 edition of the Supercup was won by Borussia Dortmund, not Bayer Leverkusen. The Ligapokal ran until 2007, after which the Supercup was revived in 2008.

Since 2010, if one team wins the double (league and cup), the winner plays the runner-up of the Bundesliga. No extra time is played in the case of a draw after 90 minutes; the match is then decided by a penalty shoot-out. The match typically is played at the home of the cup holders, or the Bundesliga runners-up in the case a team wins the double, though this is not a rule, as the DFL ultimately decides on the venue.
