AK-205

Modernized carbine of the AK-200 series, adopted by Rosgvardia.

Last updated

The AK-205 was originally designated AK-105M before being renamed in 2018.[1][2] Chambered for 5.45×39mm ammunition, the AK-205 is a compact carbine.[1][2] The AK-205 represents a modernized form of the AK-105, which itself is a shortened carbine derived from the AK-74M.[1]

How it changed

According to a 2018 report, the Rosgvardia intended to contract for 60 AK-205 carbines in 5.45×39mm.[3] Unlike the 100-series, the 200-series rifles lack side rails for optics mounting.[2] Around 2011, work on the AK-205 ceased, but development efforts were restarted approximately in 2016.[4] The AK-205 was first presented in 2018, and during that same year the Rosgvardia submitted purchase requests for it.[4][3]

Attached to the rear sight block, the AK-205's receiver cover is hinged and uses a retaining lever to help preserve zero.[5] An extended shelf on the safety lever is designed for the trigger finger.[5] The AK-205 is equipped with a folding, telescopic buttstock that is adjustable across four positions.[6]

What the maker and period sources say

The same source notes the 200-series rifles feature Krebs-style safety selector levers and semi-auto and full-auto fire modes.[2] An August 2023 article describes the AK-205 as a compact evolution taking design inspiration from the AK-200.[7]
