Hacettepe Üniversitesi B.K. is a professional basketball club from Ankara, Turkey, that was established in 1982. In the 2011-12 season, the team played in the Turkish Basketball Super League, a rare achievement for a university-based squad in the country. During its time in the top division, the team used Ankara Arena as its home court.
The club’s push for higher competition began after Prof. Dr. Uğur Erdener—a member of the International Olympic Committee’s Board of Directors and President of the World Archery Federation—became rector and initiated a restructuring aimed at reaching the first league. In the 2008–09 season, Hacettepe started in the Men’s Regional Basketball League (EBBL), the third tier. The league was split into four stages: the Ankara Group, the Eastern Group, the Qualifying Tournament, and the Final Tournament. After a strong run through the Ankara and Eastern Groups, the team advanced to the Qualifying Tournament in Alanya, where the best 18 of the original 81 teams competed. Under coach Naci Özonay, Hacettepe stayed unbeaten in those tough games and earned a spot in the finals held in Kütahya from April 21–26, 2009. There, the team won the EBBL championship, moving up to the TB2L.
In its first TB2L season (2009–10), Hacettepe topped Group A with 20 wins in 22 games and entered the playoffs as the first seed. The team defeated TED Ankara Kolejliler SK in the quarterfinals and swept Gelişim Koleji in two matches played in Yozgat and Istanbul, reaching the Final Four. There, Hacettepe finished third behind Trabzonspor and Eskişehirspor, narrowly missing promotion to the TBSL. The next season, the club assembled a strong roster and hired coach Alp Bayramoğlu. After tough series against Pertevniyal and Vestel, Hacettepe again reached the Final Four. In matches held in Istanbul and Eskişehir, the team beat Konyaspor and Kepez Belediyespor, finishing second in the TB2L Final Group and earning promotion to the Basketball Super League.
