The franchise originally operated in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, as the Bravos de Piedras Negras, before being purchased by the Universidad de Guanajuato. With support from the city government and local business figures, the team was moved to León, Guanajuato. In their debut season, the Abejas struggled but still reached the playoffs as the second-lowest seed, where they were eliminated by the eventual champions, Halcones UV Xalapa. The following year, they again made the postseason but lost in the first round to the Pioneros de Quintana Roo. In their third season, they secured the ninth seed and another playoff berth, only to be defeated in the first round by the lowest-seeded Barreteros de Zacatecas. The team’s best playoff run came in their fourth season, when they entered the postseason as the ninth seed, won their first-round series against the Huracanes de Tampico three games to one, and advanced to the quarter-finals, where they lost to the Halcones. During the 2013–14 season, the Abejas posted their best regular-season finish, placing fifth, but fell in the quarter-finals to Fuerza Regia de Monterrey.
