Dandenong Rangers (NBL1 South)

NBL1 South club from Melbourne with multiple SEABL titles.

The Dandenong Rangers are a basketball club competing in NBL1 South, based in Melbourne, Victoria. They have both a men's and a women's side. The club operates under the Dandenong Basketball Association, which is the primary basketball body for the City of Greater Dandenong. Home games are held at Dandenong Stadium.

The Dandenong Basketball Association was founded in 1959. The Rangers joined the South East Australian Basketball League as a founding member in 1981. Their first SEABL championship came in 1985, and they won the East Conference title the following year. A women's team started in 1984 as part of the Women's Basketball Conference, another inaugural member.

That side won the WBC in 1989 and moved into the SEABL women's competition when it absorbed the WBC in 1990. They went undefeated in both 1990 and 1991, winning consecutive SEABL titles and back-to-back ABA National championships. The women's team left the SEABL after 1991, the same year the Dandenong Rangers WNBL team debuted in the Women's National Basketball League. A new SEABL women's side was brought back in 1994.

The men claimed the East Conference championship in 1997, the women won the league title in 2001, and the men again took the East Conference in 2004.

After the 2004 season, the Rangers left the SEABL and joined the Big V in 2005. The men were runners-up in their first Big V season. In 2006, the men won the Big V championship, sweeping the Sandringham Sabres 2–0 in the grand final. The women were runners-up that year, losing 2–0 to Sandringham. Both teams reached the 2006 ABA National Finals, with the men losing 94–80 to the Geelong Supercats in the grand final. The men repeated as Big V champions in 2007, again beating Sandringham 2–0. At the 2007 national finals, they were runners-up once more, falling 110–98 to the Cairns Marlins. In 2008, the men lost in the Big V preliminary final.

The Rangers returned to the SEABL in 2009. From 2010 to 2012, the women won three straight SEABL championships, the first women's team to achieve that feat. The men won back-to-back East Conference titles in 2012 and 2013. They lost the 2012 SEABL grand final to the Albury Wodonga Bandits but won the 2013 championship by beating the Mount Gambier Pioneers. The women added back-to-back SEABL titles in 2015 and 2016. In 2017, the men won the South Conference championship but lost the SEABL grand final to Mount Gambier.

When the SEABL ended after 2018, the Rangers joined the new NBL1 competition for its inaugural 2019 season. The NBL1 South season was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
