Denain Voltaire Basket is a French professional basketball club, founded in 1947 and based in Denain. It currently competes in the LNB Pro B, France’s second-tier professional league.
The club began as a small school team from the Voltaire school and climbed through the ranks, reaching the top level of French basketball in 1960 by winning the French Cup. Five years later, in 1964–65, it captured the top-tier French League championship, with several players who had started as Voltaire schoolchildren. After fading from the top level in the late 1970s, the club gradually worked its way back up, returning to the second division for the 2011–12 season.
Background
Denain Voltaire Basket originated as the small club of the Voltaire school. It moved up the French basketball hierarchy until it reached the elite level in 1960, when it won the French Cup title. Five years later, the club won the top-level French League championship, with several players who had previously been Voltaire schoolchildren.
In the late 1970s, the club gradually disappeared from the major French basketball landscape. It later began to climb the French basketball ladder again, making it up to the French 2nd Division for the 2011–12 season. The club's honours include a second French Cup win in 1983–84 at the amateur level, and a Pro B Leaders Cup victory in 2017–18.
