The team earned its first global championship medal since 1936 by winning bronze at the 2023 FIBA World Cup.[1] After a 24-year absence, Canada participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics and was defeated in the quarter-final round by the host nation, France.[2]

Life and work

The team withdrew from FIBA AmeriCup qualifying games in November 2020 on medical advice due to COVID-19 risks.[3] FIBA docked Canada a point and fined Canada Basketball 160,000 Swiss francs for missing those games.[3] Canada finished the 2023 World Cup with a bronze medal, defeating the United States 127–118 in overtime.[4][1] During the 1947–48 and 1951–52 seasons, the Western Mustangs, under head coach John P. Metras, became the initial university program to participate in national team selection trials.[5]

The disappointing 2010 world championship outcome was attributed by observers to the unavailability of Steve Nash, Samuel Dalembert, Jamaal Magloire, and Matt Bonner.[6] At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Canada participated for the first time and earned a silver medal.[7] Jordi Fernández, an assistant coach with the Sacramento Kings, was appointed as the new head coach of Team Canada on June 27, 2023, succeeding Nick Nurse.[8]

What the cited sources add

Samuel Dalembert said a dispute with head coach Leo Rautins at the 2008 Olympic qualifying tournament led to him being thrown off the team.[9] Dalembert stated he was open to playing for Canada in the future despite his negative first experience.[9] Nick Nurse backed Canada Basketball's decision to withdraw from games during the pandemic, calling it understandable.[10] Canada Basketball said the FIBA fine would divert funds from grassroots programs and high-performance competitions.[10]

Rautins emphasized the necessity of playing without mistakes, yet the 2010 World Championship squad was affected by injuries and a stomach illness.[11]
