São José Basketball, officially named Associação Esportiva São José dos Campos Basketball, is a professional team from São José dos Campos, in São Paulo State, Brazil. It competes in the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB), the country’s top division.
The club was a powerhouse in Brazilian basketball during the 1970s and 1980s. It won the São Paulo State Championship in 1980 and 1981, and also captured the Brazilian Championship (Campeonato Brasileiro) in 1981. After that, the team went nearly three decades without a title.
In 2009, São José claimed its third state championship by defeating C.A. Paulistano in the finals; point guard Fúlvio de Assis was named the best player. The following year, the team lost to C.R. Flamengo in the NBB quarterfinals, 3–0. Later in 2010, Limeira eliminated São José in the state quarterfinals. In 2011, the club suffered two more quarterfinal exits: one in the NBB against Franca, and another in the state championship finals, which were won by E.C. Pinheiros. The 2011–12 NBB season saw São José reach the finals for the first time in years, defeating Franca and Flamengo in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively, before losing to Brasília in the championship series.
The team’s honors include one Brazilian Championship title (1981) and one runner-up finish (2012), as well as a runner-up spot in the South American Club Championship (1981). At the regional level, São José has won three São Paulo State Championships (1980, 1981, 2009) and finished runner-up twice (1952, 2011). It also won the Campeonato Paulista A2 in 2005 and was runner-up in the Brazilian 2nd Division in 2018.
Beyond basketball, the club operates sections in association football, futsal, martial arts, golf, gymnastics, swimming, and tennis.
