Last updated
Griffey was born in Donora, Pennsylvania, and his family moved to Cincinnati when his father, Ken Griffey Sr., debuted for the Reds in 1973.[1] In his first 11 seasons with Seattle, Griffey amassed 1,752 hits, 398 home runs, and 1,152 RBI.[2] Griffey hit his 600th career home run on June 9, 2008, off Florida Marlins pitcher Mark Hendrickson.[3] In the 1987 MLB draft, the Seattle Mariners chose Griffey as the very first pick.[4]
After that trade, Griffey agreed to a contract with the Reds worth $112.5 million over nine years.[5]
What the cited sources add
An ESPN report from December 1999 stated that the New York Mets had a trade in place for Griffey, but he rejected it because he grew up in Cincinnati and wanted to play there.[6] The same report noted that Griffey's agent said if he could not go to Cincinnati, he would return to Seattle for the final year of his contract.[6] A Baseball Almanac record confirms that Griffey is tied with Don Mattingly and Dale Long for the most consecutive games with a home run (eight).[7][8]
