Gameplay

The story advances through story and boss rounds at each level, with real-time cut scenes. The player controls Alita in 3D environments from a third-person perspective, exploring and interacting with NPCs. In story mode, pressing Select enters Battle Mode, or the player can avoid combat by running past enemies. Multi-opponent fights are handled one opponent at a time. The hunter-warrior system lets the player exit story mode to fight opponents with price tags above their heads, earning money for weapons and upgrades. Motorball matches involve racing around a track, surviving against other players, and facing bosses in advanced matches.

Conception and development

Kishiro, unsatisfied with the original manga's ending due to personal reasons, conceived a Battle Angel Alita role-playing video game in October 1995 to tell the Space Story he could not present in the manga. After proposing the idea to his chief editor, it was brought to Banpresto. The cover illustration, a variation of a magazine illustration of Gally with a blue background, took him a month. Kishiro initially envisioned 2D graphics but agreed to 3D. Originally planned for 1997, it was delayed to 1998. Kishiro later expanded the game's story into the manga Battle Angel Alita: Last Order and Battle Angel Alita: Mars Chronicle.
