Gameplay
The game features special techniques and jutsus, with some characters able to activate a special mode by inflicting these techniques, enhancing their status and granting new abilities. Items such as shuriken and kunai are available. Multi-layered stages from the Naruto universe include the Hidden Leaf Village, the Chunin Exam arena, and the Forest of Death. Support characters appear, for example Iruka supporting Naruto Uzumaki and Kakashi Hatake supporting Sasuke. An arcade-style story mode loosely covers events from the Introduction arc through the Invasion of Konoha arc, told from twelve different characters' perspectives, some deviating from the original manga (such as Neji being declared winner against Naruto). Each story consists of up to six battles separated by manga-style dialogue displays. The Japanese version had 12 characters; North American and European versions added Nine-Tailed Naruto and Curse Mark Sasuke as separate bonus characters, removing their ability to transform during battle. These transformations later served as the basis for those in Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3.
Reception
The game received generally favorable reviews according to Metacritic. Famitsu gave it a score of 30 out of 40. GamePro noted that fans of Naruto would find the game enjoyable for both single-player and two-player modes.
