Leones de Ponce (basketball)

Fourteen-time BSN champions from Ponce, Puerto Rico.

Last updated

The Leones de Ponce are a professional basketball team based in Ponce, Puerto Rico, competing in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN). Founded in 1946, the franchise has won fourteen league championships, tying the Atléticos de San Germán and trailing only the Vaqueros de Bayamón. Their most recent title came in 2015, when they defeated the Capitanes de Arecibo in the finals.

History

The Leones claimed their first championship in 1952, twenty-two years after BSN tournaments began. They repeated in 1954, but the 1953 tournament was abandoned after a brawl involving players from Ponce and San Germán that BSN officials could not control. No further titles came until 1960. The 1960s proved highly successful: the team won in 1960 and 1961, then secured three consecutive championships in 1964, 1965, and 1966.

Guard Juan "Pachín" Vicens was instrumental in this success, and the team's venue now bears his name. Tex Winter coached the Leones to their two 1950s titles, while Red Holzman was the main architect of the three-peat from 1964 to 1966. After the 1966 title, the franchise endured a 24-year championship drought. In 1984, the team reached a low point when it was discovered they had violated BSN rules by signing David Ponce, an American-born Puerto Rican who had not met the three-year residency requirement for nationalization.

The ensuing scandal led the league to cancel the normal finals and instead hold the Copa Olímpica championship, from which the Leones were excluded. During 1983 and 1984, the Leones roster included Puerto Rican star Angel Santiago, who later returned for six games in 1995.

International competition

Leones de Ponce made their international debut in the 2014 FIBA Americas League as the BSN runner-up, accepting an invitation to participate. Placed in Group B hosted by Montevideo, the team competed during the BSN off-season and relied on local players, including young core members SF Carlos Emory, PF Chris Gaston, and SG Mike Rosario, along with veterans SF/PF Gabriel Colón, PG Guayito Santiago, and SG/SF Rick Apodaca, plus reinforcements Eric Griffin (PF), Weyinmi Efejuku (G), and Walter Sharpe (PF).

In their first game, they lost 81-85 to Unitri/Uberlândia of Brazil's Novo Basquete Brasil. They rebounded with a 90-73 victory over Club Atlético Lanús, runner-up of the Liga Nacional de Básquet. Entering the final group date with a chance to eliminate Unitri/Uberlândia and advance, the Leones lost 92-93 to Club Atlético Aguada after Leandro García Morales hit a two-point buzzer-beater. The team returned to the FIBA Americas League in 2017, hosting Group D at Auditorio Juan Pachín Vicéns to build chemistry before the BSN season.

The roster combined regular PG Andrés Torres with reinforcements Carlos Arroyo (PG), Filiberto Rivera (PG), Hakim Warrick (PF/C), and Eric Dawson (PF/C), though SF Carlos Emory was lost to injury before the tournament. Ponce debuted with a 76-61 win over Academia de la Montaña of Colombia, then advanced by defeating Cocodrilos de Caracas 88-84. Before the final group game, regular SG Víctor Liz suffered a calf injury, and the team lost 92-96 in overtime to Weber Bahía Blanca.
