England cricket team
Founding nation of international cricket and three-time world champion.
Last updated
England have played 1,099 Test matches, winning 407, and have won the ICC Cricket World Cup once, in 2019.[1][2] The England and Wales Cricket Board has been the team's governing body since 1997; before that, from 1903, the Marylebone Cricket Club held that role.[3]
Making and release
The first recorded "All-England" team played against Kent on 9 July 1739 and lost by "very few notches".[4] That team was captained by George Parr and included six players from the All-England Eleven.[5] England's 1882–83 tour was dubbed by captain Ivo Bligh as "the quest to regain the ashes".[6] The All-England Eleven was established by William Clarke in 1846.[7]
England's first overseas tour, to North America, began in September 1859.[5] A commercial venture by the Melbourne restaurateurs Messrs Spiers and Pond brought English tourists to Australia in 1861–62.[8] On 21 September 1876, a team led by James Lillywhite departed on the steamship Poonah.[8] That contest is now considered the first Test match.[8]
The initial Test match held in England took place in 1880; the home side won, and W. G. Grace was part of the team.[9]
What the cited sources add
Brearley wrote that Botham's cricket and the team's morale had declined over a draining period.[10] The article quotes Botham's strategy at Headingley as being to "let your arms go with the bat and hit the ball as hard as you can".[10]
