Origins

The Senators began as the Newcastle Senators, emerging from the Newcastle Browns and playing at Northern Rugby Club in Newcastle. They won the Division 1 title with a 10–0 record and gained promotion to the National Division. After the Trojans folded, the Senators acquired new players. In 1988 the club moved to Gateshead International Stadium and changed its name to the Gateshead International Senators, earning the nickname the GIs. Further player influxes came from the Tyneside Tigers in 1995 and the Stockton Gators in 1996.

The club today

The team draws players from Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Washington, Darlington, Teesside and Durham. The most successful year was 1999, when the Senators won the Division 1 title. They reached the playoffs in 2000, 2001 and 2002. After moving to Division 2 in 2003 due to player retirements, the team went 10–0 and reached the semi-final, returning to Division 1. They reached the playoffs every season until 2007 and retained their Premier Division place for 2008. In 2013 the Senators competed in the National Division, advancing to the Britbowl National Final, where they lost to the Colchester Gladiators. They defeated the DC Presidents, Merseyside Nighthawks and Chester Romans en route. The Senators competed in the Premier Division for the 2014 season.

Youth team

The Senators offer a full youth programme with fully kitted football for ages 13 to 19. The youth team won two Northern Conference titles in 2007 and 2008 and represented the north of Britain against the London Warriors at Doncaster Keepmoat Stadium. In 2011 the youth team reached the Brit Bowl final but lost to the London Blitz in Crystal Palace. The club provides flag football training at Monkton Stadium and local schools. The youth kitted team plays in the BAFA Youth League.
