The performers first met at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April 2019, where they took pictures later used to promote the single. Bad Bunny later attended Rosalía's concert at the Mayan Theater in Los Angeles, sparking rumors of a future collaboration and possible romance, which was later denied. In July 2020, Rosalía traveled to San Juan to work on her album, collaborating with Tainy, Chris Jedi, Gaby Music, and Tego Calderón. Bad Bunny told Billboard that they wanted to work together for a long time, but the right moment hadn't come. While in Puerto Rico, Chris Jedi sent Bad Bunny a rhythmic base he had been working on with Rosalía; Bad Bunny initially let it sit but later couldn't stop singing it and decided to take a stab at it. The song was released as the fourth and final single off the album on February 14, 2021, through Rimas Entertainment along with its music video.
