Django Jane

Background

Monáe revealed her third studio album, Dirty Computer, through a teaser video on YouTube on February 16, 2018. She then released "Django Jane" and "Make Me Feel" as the album's first two singles. In an interview with The Guardian, Monáe described the song as a response to threats against her rights as a woman, a black woman, and a sexually liberated woman, and as support for black women and other marginalized groups.

Music video

The official music video for "Django Jane" was uploaded to YouTube on February 22, 2018, the same day as the single's release. Directed by Andrew Donoho and Chuck Lightning, the "emotion picture" shows Monáe surrounded by many women and wearing both a red and a green suit. In one scene, she visually references a moment from Sebastián Lelio's Chilean film A Fantastic Woman; Lelio later stated he did not know if Monáe had seen his film but found it exciting to see the moment reflected in her video.

Billboard's Natalie Maher noted that Monáe sits atop a throne surrounded by a female army in matching suits, rapping about gender and race, with the video including mentions of "pussy power" and raised-fist symbolism. XXL's C. Vernon Coleman II described the visual as showing Monáe as a crown-holder on her throne, surrounded by women who look like they mean business, later breaking into a choreographed dance routine.
