Life and work

In 2007, Wan directed Dead Silence, which he described as "a creepy doll movie" in the spirit of old Twilight Zone episodes.[2] Wan returned to horror with Insidious, which premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival and was sold to Sony Pictures Worldwide within four hours.[3] A Bachelor of Arts in media was awarded to Wan by RMIT in 1999.[4] The year 2004 saw Wan's first feature film as a director, Saw, which brought in more than US$103 million from global audiences.[5][6]

Globally, the Saw film series has taken in over $1 billion, marking it as a commercial success.[5] The 2013 film The Conjuring was built around the true stories of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.[7] Wan's work beyond horror includes directing Furious 7 (2015) and the DC Extended Universe superhero movies Aquaman (2018) and its follow-up.[8]
