Pig's Breakfast
Australian sci-fi comedy about alien kids hosting a TV show.
Pig's Breakfast is an Australian children's television series blending science fiction and comedy. It was created by Mark Shirrefs and John Thomson, and originally aired on the Nine Network from 5 July 1999 to 22 October 2000.
The story follows two alien schoolchildren, Grob and Meeba, whose galactic school bus accidentally crashes into a television studio at Channel 9 on Earth. A producer mistakes them for actors in rubber suits who have arrived to perform a skit for her children's show. The aliens prove so popular that she hires them as hosts, and the show's ratings climb. Two human children, Rodney and Lucy Green, discover the aliens' true identities and help protect them while the aliens work to repair their bus and return home.
The main cast includes Eve Morey as Lucy Green, Dean Measor as Plaag, Nicholas Russell as Rodney Green, Catherine Mack-Hancock as Jessica, Sally Cooper as Dee Davis, Heath McIvor as Grob, Jennifer Priest as Meeba, and George Kapiniaris (voice) and Phillip Millar (puppetry) as Queegle. Guest actors include Annie Jones, Ernie Gray, Francis Greenslade, Gary Files, Geoff Paine, Jeremy Hopkins, Jeremy Kewley, Kate Gorman, Lynda Gibson, Monica Maughan, Paul Mercurio, Peta Brady, Rebecca Ritters, Sophie Heathcote, Sullivan Stapleton, Tania Lacy, and Terry Norris.
Shirrefs and Thomson first conceived the series in 1989 as a magazine-style show about aliens who crash-land on Earth and interview humans to learn about the planet. A decade later, they adapted the premise into a sitcom. After pitching it, the Nine Network and production company Southern Star Entertainment agreed to co-produce 52 episodes without commissioning a pilot. The television studio scenes were filmed in and around the Richmond studios of GTV-9 in Melbourne.
Internationally, the series aired on ITV's CITV in the United Kingdom and on RTÉ2's The Den in Ireland.
