Last updated
Euphoria were an Australian dance-pop trio formed in 1991. They achieved two number-one singles on the ARIA Singles Chart and released one album. The group disbanded in mid-1993.
History
Producer Andrew Klippel, son of sculptor Robert Klippel, founded Euphoria in Sydney in 1991. He played keyboards and sang backing vocals, while Holly Garnett and Keren Minshull provided lead vocals and dancing. Klippel and Minshull had previously played together in Electric Soul. Klippel also formed a songwriting and production duo called ESP with Melbourne DJ Ean Sugarman.
Minshull had worked as a session vocalist for Swanee, Noni Hazlehurst, and Jade Hurley, and had co-lead vocals with Rick Price on "Celebration of a Nation" in 1988. The demo of "Love You Right", co-written by Klippel and Sugarman, was played for a trucker who suggested the name Euphoria. The single was released in October 1991 and reached number one on the ARIA Singles Chart in February 1992 after being featured on the TV soap opera E Street. Its music video included E Street cast members Kelley Abbey and Simon Baker as backup dancers.
The group was nominated for Best New Talent at the ARIA Music Awards of 1992. The second single "One in a Million" also reached number one in April 1992. Subsequent singles "Do for You" peaked at number seven and "I Will Never Leave You" at number 41. The album Total Euphoria, released in October 1992, reached number 14 on the ARIA Albums Chart and was co-produced and co-written by Klippel and Sugarman.
After Euphoria
After Euphoria ended, Andrew Klippel wrote songs and produced for Human Nature, Marta Sánchez, Katie Noonan, and Jocelyn Brown. He also started the dance groups Elastic and A.K. Soul; the latter put out the singles "Free" and "Show You Love" with Brown in 1997. Keren Minshull and Holly Garnett did session singing and solo work. Ean Sugarman moved to the United States, where he worked as a DJ, remixer, and producer.
Minshull stayed in Sydney as a singer-songwriter, releasing the album You're Driving in 2011 and starting her own label, Keren Minshull Music, in 2012. She said in 2011 that Euphoria felt dated and didn't match modern mainstream music, but in a 2018 interview she credited the group with pushing Australia's music scene into dance after years of resistance. Jodhi Meares went back to modeling and later created a fashion clothing line. Holly Garnett died by suicide on 13 October 1998 at age 29.
Her brother Martin Garnett, born 1966, was a convicted drug trafficker arrested in Thailand in September 1993. He spent time in Thai prisons and was on death row; after his commuted sentence ended in 2011, he was moved to an Indiana prison for smuggling drugs into that state while in a Thai prison. He finished his sentence in Sydney and was freed in 2015.
