2021 Chicago–Evanston shootings

Events

The shooting began before 1:50 PM, when Nightengale killed 30-year-old Yiran Fan, a Chinese PhD student, with a gunshot to the head while Fan sat in his car inside a Hyde Park parking garage. Nightengale then went to an apartment building at 4940 S. East End Ave., where he shot and killed 46-year-old doorwoman Aisha Johnson and wounded a 77-year-old woman in the head as she picked up her mail. He next entered another apartment building on the 5500 block of South East End, stole a red Toyota from someone he knew, and drove to the AK Food Mart at 9307 S. Halsted St. Inside, he shot 20-year-old Anthony Faulkner in the head, killing him, and wounded an 81-year-old woman in the neck and back.

He then jumped over the counter, robbed the cash register, and left. At 4:00 PM, Nightengale shot 15-year-old Damia Smith in the back seat of her mother's car on the 10300 block of South Halsted Street; Smith later died from her injuries on February 2, 2021. At some point, Nightengale went back to the AK Food Mart and fired at police officers who were investigating, hitting a police car with one bullet but causing no injuries. In Evanston, he fired a shot at a CVS Pharmacy on 101 Asbury Ave., missing everyone.

He then entered an IHOP, allegedly took 61-year-old Marta Torres hostage, and shot her; Torres died eight days later. Nightengale ran from the scene, and Evanston Police chased him. As he moved toward a Dollar General, officers shot him multiple times. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
