The Fireman (band)

English experimental duo of Paul McCartney and Youth.

Last updated

The Fireman is an English experimental music duo formed in 1993 by Paul McCartney and Youth. Their catalogue spans rock and electronica across three albums, evolving over more than two decades. Although the group was officially anonymous until 2008, the members' identities were known to the public soon after their first album.

History

In early 1993, Paul McCartney had finished recording tracks for his ninth solo studio album Off the Ground and was mixing the songs. Wanting input from another producer, his friend Allen Crowder recommended Youth. McCartney phoned Youth about mixing the album and invited him to his private Hog Hill studio in Sussex. Youth accepted, and they remixed songs for the album released in February 1993.

Working together professionally, they became good friends and felt their musical relationship could expand beyond McCartney's solo work, so they began compiling material that became Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest. The collaboration started as a hobby. McCartney proposed that Youth go through the multi tracks of Off the Ground and sample material to create songs. Youth made tracks using samples, though much of the final product used previous work or newly recorded material by McCartney.

Youth worked on mixes for a few days at McCartney's Sussex studio and presented his work to McCartney and Linda McCartney, who stayed up all night watching him. Youth recalls McCartney saying, "We love these mixes so much I wanna put them all out as an album." The duo decided to officially release the album. The final product consisted of nine songs centered on a common musical theme and techno dance beat with slight variations, like different mixes on a 12-inch single.

The album, with a pure red background cover, was the first Fireman release and lacked both McCartney's and Youth's names but referred to MPL Communications. It was released in November 1993. Shortly before release, the true identities were leaked to the press, and most buyers knew the Fireman was a pseudonym for McCartney and Youth. This broke the guise McCartney wanted but allowed the album more attention.

Musical style/development

The Fireman began as an ambient techno group but over three albums morphed into an experimental rock band more reminiscent of McCartney's solo work. The duo cited strong influence from "Tomorrow Never Knows," a Lennon-McCartney track from 1966's Revolver. The recording process was casual and spontaneous; Youth described this informal approach in Sound on Sound. McCartney found the process thrilling and sometimes frightening compared to his orderly studio style, saying, "If I hadn't done The Fireman, I think I would wish I'd done that, because it freshened ideas up for me."
