Atlético Madrid was founded in 1903 as a branch of Athletic Club of Bilbao, created by a Basque colony of students led by Eduardo de Acha. The club gained independence in 1907. Real Madrid originated from a split in Sky Football in 1900, led by Julián Palacios, and was officially founded on 6 March 1902. The two clubs have contrasting supporter bases: Real Madrid's fans are said to be better-off citizens and more politically conservative, while Atlético Madrid draws support mostly from working-class citizens.
