Release

Atlantic Records released The Greatest Showman soundtrack for pre-order on October 26, 2017, with the full album arriving on December 8, 2017. It first appeared on the Billboard 200 at number 71, then spent two weeks at number one. By January 7, 2018, it had held the top spot for two weeks, reaching its peak in its fourth week with 106,000 copies sold. In its third week, it fell to number two, though it outsold the week's top album in traditional sales (70,000 versus 65,000) but couldn't claim the top spot due to TEA and SEA units. By December 2019, the album had moved over 1,731,000 pure copies in the United States. On February 7, 2018, it became a breakout hit, hitting number one on the UK album chart and number two in the US. By February 27, it was the top album on iTunes. By March 23, 2018, it had spent eleven straight weeks at number one in the UK, selling 465,000 copies, with about 40% of those on CD and vinyl. On April 6, it climbed back to number one for its 12th non-consecutive week. As of February 24, 2019, the soundtrack had accumulated 28 non-consecutive weeks atop the UK official album chart, making it the longest-reigning album of the decade, surpassing Adele's 21, which had 23 weeks.

Critical reception

The album was selected for the 2017 Oprah's Favorite Things list. By February 23, 2018, the track "This Is Me" was nominated for Best Original Song at the 2018 Academy Awards. According to Sky News on March 25, 2018, music critics have put the album's success down to the feel-good, uplifting pop tunes which are also old school at the same time. Sheila O'Malley of RogerEbert.com called the 11 songs "memorable," praising the vocal performances of the leads. Bustle gave it a positive review, particularly certain vocal performances. Stereogum described the soundtrack music as eclectic in its influences, giving it a negative reception for serving up earnest buoyancy in many high-fructose flavors. The Ringer noted the bombastic tunes mix EDM gleams with stadium-rock grunts, chest-pounding ballads with peppy empowerment anthems, calling it a gilded cheese ball. The Guardian wrote that the album brought a whole lot of self-empowerment, enlivened with some deracinated R&B beats and power ballads.

Live performances

Keala Settle brought "This Is Me" to television audiences on The Graham Norton Show in early February 2018, then again on The Ellen DeGeneres Show later that month. She also sang it at the 90th Academy Awards in March 2018 and on The X Factor in November of the same year. Loren Allred performed "Never Enough" live at Church by the Glades in April 2018. Hugh Jackman kicked off the 2019 Brit Awards with "The Greatest Show." Settle returned to the stage with "This Is Me" at the Royal Variety Performance in December 2021.

The Greatest Showman: Reimagined

A re-recorded version of the film's soundtrack, The Greatest Showman: Reimagined features new takes on the original songs performed by artists such as Pink, Kesha, and Kelly Clarkson. It came out on November 16, 2018. Kesha's rendition of "This Is Me" first appeared as a standalone single on December 22, 2017, to promote the original soundtrack, and was later added to this re-release. Before the album dropped, Pink and her daughter Willow Sage Hart released "A Million Dreams" and its reprise as promotional singles when pre-orders began on October 24, 2018. Panic! at the Disco's cover of "The Greatest Show" followed as a second promotional single on November 2, 2018. On the album's release date, the music video for James Arthur and Anne-Marie's "Rewrite the Stars" was also released.
