Critical reception

Droptopwop received generally positive reviews from critics. Preezy of XXL wrote that the mixtape gives customers exactly what they seek, calling it a quality addition to Gucci Mane's catalog. Aaron McKrell of HipHopDX noted that Gucci's knack for memorable music compensates for a lack of dexterity, giving the project a strong sense of unique artistry. Paul A. Thompson of Pitchfork described Droptopwop as Gucci's first post-prison project that fully comes together, largely due to Metro Boomin's contributions.

Marshall Gu of Pretty Much Amazing called it a mild win for both artists. In a mixed review, AllMusic's Neil Z. Yeung stated that while worthwhile, the mixtape will most appeal to dedicated fans after a year of many releases. Corrigan B of Tiny Mix Tapes remarked that Droptopwop is a high point of Gucci's post-jail music but remains a plateau.
