Background
This was the twenty-fifth time the men's triple jump appeared at the Summer Olympics, a feat matched by only eleven other athletics events. Among the finalists returning from the 2000 Games were Yoelbi Quesada of Cuba, Phillips Idowu of Great Britain, Andrew Murphy of Australia, Walter Davis of the United States, and Charles Friedek of Germany. The favorite was Sweden's Christian Olsson, the 2003 world champion who had placed second in 2001. Nine nations—Belarus, Burkina Faso, Estonia, Grenada, Moldova, Qatar, Slovenia, Syria, and Trinidad and Tobago—competed for the first time. The United States made its 24th appearance, its only absence being the 1980 boycott.
