The album was produced and arranged by Worden, and recorded by Husky Höskulds, who also mixed it. It took six years to complete and was originally conceived as string quartet pieces. Compared to the prior album Tear It Down, A Thousand Shark's Teeth features more orchestration, elegant instrumentation, and arrangements including soprano and pizzicato strings, strings, keys, and percussion. The bonus track "The Gentlest Gentleman" was included with an iTunes download.
Reception
AllMusic notes that the album's elaborate scope can make it too subtle for a strong initial impression, but when the arrangements and melodies are more direct the results are stunning, calling it beautiful and intriguing. Pitchfork describes Worden as a creative chameleon with endless technical skill, and finds the song "The Gentlest Gentleman" a stunningly simple ukulele ditty that reveals more than a thousand violins. PopMatters calls it a swooning, big-gestured album to get lost in, discovering new complexities each time. The A.V. Club gives a mixed review, calling it a bleaker, creepier expansion of Worden's symphonic rock, but notes that "From the Top of the World" balances space, ambient hissing, darkness, mystery, and melody with patience.
