History
Monkey got its start in the middle of 1995 when Curtis Meacham and Kevin Miller teamed up. Their debut album, ¡Changito!, dropped in 1997. After that, the band saw a lot of member swaps, though Meacham and Miller stuck around.
They snagged a Bay Area Music award (a Bammy) in 1999. Their second album, Station Wagon Living, came out on their own during the third wave ska bust. Miller left the group in 2001, and Meacham, who had been the singer and organist, switched to lead guitar.
In 2004, Monkey signed a deal and put out Cruel Tutelage on Asian Man Records. While on a European tour, they crossed paths with Bad Manners in the UK and later backed them on a US tour. Their 2009 release, Lost at Sea, included trumpet work from Hepcat’s Kincaid Smith and cover art by Yo Gabba Gabba’s Parker Jacobs.
