History
Formed in 1998, the Dutch Eurodance project Alice Deejay was the brainchild of producers Wessel van Diepen, Dennis van den Driesschen, Sebastiaan Molijn, and Eelke Kalberg, with contributions from Sven Maes and Johan Gielen. The group was fronted by vocalist Judith Anna Pronk, alongside dancers Mila Levesque and Yutin, who was later replaced by Angelique Versnel. Their debut single, "Better Off Alone," was released in 1998 under the name DJ Jurgen presents Alice Deejay.
It became a global hit, selling over one million albums and five million singles worldwide. The track reached the top ten in numerous European nations, charted in North America, went platinum in the UK where it peaked at number two, and hit number three on the US Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, as well as number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. The follow-up, "Back in My Life," arrived in November 1999, topping the charts in Norway and landing in the top ten across Denmark, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the UK.
The project’s sole album, Who Needs Guitars Anyway?, was released in March 2000 and broke into the UK Albums Chart top ten. Three more singles from the album—"Will I Ever," "The Lonely One," and "Celebrate Our Love"—each reached the UK top twenty. Pronk and backing singers toured dance venues until the original lineup disbanded in 2002. After a long hiatus, the original producers revived the act in 2014 with a new vocalist, Ilona, rebranding slightly as Alice DJ and hitting the road.
In October 2021, Pronk announced her return for a European tour, marking her first live performance as Alice Deejay in twenty years on 16 October 2021 at Belgium’s Ethias Arena. Her final show took place at Kubix Festival in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, on 14 December 2024.
